Environment and Conservation

These links have been carefully selected and were considered relevant and suitable for school use at the time of checking. Clicking on them will take you to other websites over which we have no control. If you have any doubts or concerns please check what is at the other end before using them in lessons.   • * Acid Rain
    A useful resource for students / teachers. This overview looks at the causes of acid rain, the effects it has on the environment, and why we still produce the pollution that causes it. It is aimed at students with a basic understanding of geography. Scroll down the Contents Table to the Environment And Pollution section, then select 'Acid Rain'. A very good school site.

    * Acid Rain
    Useful resources for students / teachers. There is an introduction to Acid Rain and explanations of acidity and Acid Rain. The site also looks at the effects of Acid Rain on forests, people, water and man made materials. It includes some experiments and activities.

    * Agriculture
    This is a mining company guide and, following their usual layout, it consists of articles written by the site maintainer, links to other sites, and a small amount of totally unrelated advertising.

    * AgricultureB2B - Environmental News
    A useful website featuring recent agriculture and environmental news from around the world. Sections cover different aspects of farming, from Ag Chemicals to Vegetable Farming. Very useful resource for keeping up to date with recent events in environmental issues and agriculture.

    * Alternative Energy Information
    This is an on-line, searchable database of more than 2500 energy efficiency and renewable energy annotated web links that has been sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency. It includes case studies, reports, publications, economic analyses, product directories, discussion groups and country profiles.

    * Biodiversity and Ecosystems Network
    A range of topics, mostly suited to older students, including virtual libraries, publications, proceedings of various workshops, and links to Biodiversity Information Networks.

    * Biomes / Ecosystems

    * Canadian Forest Service
    This is the home of the Canadian Government body responsible for managing and protecting their forests. It includes sections about forest resources, Canadian forests and climate change, wildland fire information and regional development.

    * Canadian World Parrot Trust
    For those of you who are interested in parrots, this site will tell you about the endangered varieties of the bird, with informative text and plenty of pictures.

    * Center for Plant Conservation
    Endangered plants, their names, what they look like and what needs to be done to protect them. This informative site is hosted by the Missouri Botanical Garden, and should be of use to teachers and alert students.

    * Climate and Global Change
    This site is run by the US Geological Survey. It looks at the character of environments in the past and present, and the geological, biological, hydrological, and geochemical processes involved in environmental change. The content is aimed at students with existing knowledge of the topic, and is not a good spot for young novices. If you are more aware of the topic, the information found here will be both stimulating and informative.

    * Conservation Online
    This library of texts and documents is aimed at professional environmentalists, so if you are seeking up to date, technical details this is an excellent place to visit.

    * Contour Farming
    An explanation of how contour farming works, why it helps to conserve soil, and how farmers should go about using contour farming on their land.

    * Crop Rotation
    An explanation of how crop rotation works, why it helps to maintain nutrients in the soil and prevent disease, and how farmers should go about using crop rotation on their land.

    * Ecological Glossary
    An alphabetical list of terms and words used by ecologists, and plain english explanations of their meanings. A useful site for students who need to look up unfamiliar words they have found during their research.

    * EcoNet
    A vast quantity of information about current ecological issues and disasters, all written in a non-technical way so we can all understand it. A useful site for schools.

    * EcoWeb
    From their main page you can perform a keyword search of all the texts in their library, then access the documents it matches to your needs. Another useful research site for students starting out on project work or assignments.

    * Endangered Species
    An informative site ideal for school and home use with sections on various species, lists of endangered creatures worldwide, assorted pictures, and advice on how to investigate endangered species in the classroom ( I don't think that means sane teachers, but you never know )

    * Energy and the Environment
    This is a page of links to topics such as Acid Rain, Remote Sensing, the Greenhouse Effect and Fossil Fuels. A good place to begin a search for topics involving energy sources, uses or resources.

    * EnviroLink Network
    This is one of the largest environmental information sites on the internet, with, they tell us, over 375,000 users daily! An excellent source of environmental resources including Animal Rights, Green Products and EnviroArts.

    * Environmental Database for use in Schools
    From Southampton University in the UK, the site tries to raise awareness of environmental issues and suggest some solutions. It is designed for use by students and in schools, and concentrates on engineering projects which are designed to help the environment.

    * Environmental Education Database
    This is another useful site offering a keyword search facility for topics related to Environmental Education.

    * Environmental Glossary
    Environmental words and acronyms that you are likely to find whilst researching environmental issues.

    * Environmental Index
    Part of the Southampton University Database for use in Schools Project, this site offers information about numerous subjects such as Global Warming, Biodiversity, Air Pollution and Water Resources. It is aimed at school age readers and is an excellent site for school project work.

    * Environmental Organization WebDirectory
    This claims to be the Earths Biggest Environment Search Engine. Whether that is true I cannot say, but it certainly does have a vast selection of links, all housed in sub-categories such as Disaster, Pollution and Forestry. You can search by category or use a keyword search facility. Another good starting place for school project research.

    * European Centre for Nature Conservation
    An independent european organisation that aims to link political policy makers and scientists, with the intention of bringing conservation issues into political decisions and policies. The site outlines their structure and aims, and offers links to its four departments.

    * Greenhouse Effect
    What is the greenhouse effect? This page gives a simple and clear description of the cause and nature of the Greenhouse Effect. Large, bold type make it especially handy for students with vision difficulties.

    * Greenpeace International
    This is the home site of the international organisation. It included current news, information about key environmental issues, and the activities of GreenPeace.

    * Guide to Water Pollution
    This school friendly site contains useful information about the sources of water pollution and the potential dangers it causes. It also gives a number of tips on preventing it and ways to help keep our waters clean. Clear information and entertaining graphics.

    * Info on Solar Energy
    This is run by a solar power expert who offers advice on which systems to use, how to install a solar electric system and over a hundred articles about alternative energy.

  • * Institute of Terrestrial Ecology
    This is a part of the UK Natural Environment Research Council, and offers details of their six research stations, environmental information, a library service and many other features. The content is mainly text and not often aimed at younger readers.

    * International Centre for Antarctic Information and Research

    * Kew Gardens
    The Royal Botanical gardens in London,UK. Kew Gardens are both a serious research centre and a public attraction. The site has information about visiting Kew, the plant collections, it's education services and current scientific research.

    * Marine Mammal Page
    Another excellent source of information for schools. This site provides a list of links to sites specialising in marine mammal issues.

    * Mote Marine Laboratory
    Information about marine life, marine mammals rehabilitated at the park, marine related courses, and the rather exciting fact that you can find Beanie Babies in their gift shop - ugh!

    * National Wetlands Inventory USA
    The NWI provides information about the characteristics, status and extent of wetlands and deepwater habitats in the USA. This includes Ecology, data to download and assorted reports and publications.

    * National Wildlife Federation
    An online magazine with a vast array of articles ranging from remembering Chico Mendez through to the re-introduction of the grey wolf to forest areas. An excellent place to visit, full of interesting information.

    * Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
    NERC isn't a rude word to call your friends, its the leading body in the UK for research, surveying, monitoring and training in the environmental sciences. Their site offers access to news, environmental data, their awards and training programs and similar topics. Suited more towards older students and those involved in more detailed research projects.

    * Nature
    Nature is a free, weekly, magazine distributed via the internet. If contains a wide variety of articles about both topical and general interest subjects, as well as job information and announcements of international events. The content is always interesting and well presented. Suitable for most students though possibly too technical at times for younger readers.

    * Northmoor Trust
    The Northmoor Trust is based in South Oxfordshire and manages an estate of 300 hectares, including Little Wittenham Nature Reserve, a conservation farm and a new woodland. Their website includes information about events, lesson ideas,visits, activites and generally interesting and useful information about conservation and what the Trust is doing.

    * OneWorld Magazine
    OneWorld is a free internet magazine that focuses on environmental, cultural and exploration issues around the world. It contains an interesting range of articles and stories that provide reliable information on numerous topics. Readers are encouraged to become involved with the magazine and in the production of material for publication.

    * Orangutan Foundation International
    Orangutan facts, maps of their habitats, historical background to their current problems, and a host of other Orangutan information is provided.There is also information about how you can help to save these animals.

    * Ozone Layer
    A useful resource for students / teachers. This overview explains what the ozone layer is, what it does and why it is talked about so much. Causes of the ozone hole are considered and the role of cfc's touched upon. Some of the effects of increased uv radiation are also considered. It is aimed at students with a basic understanding of geography. Scroll down the Contents Table to the Environment And Pollution section, then select 'Ozone Layer'.

    * PIDB Treaty Texts
    The information on this site represents the complete texts of more than 169 environmental agreements. They can be accessed using alphabetical, chronological, free text or subject searches. A very useful site if you want to know what different governments have agreed to do in relation to environmental issues.

    * Pollution at Sea
    The space shuttle has been used to locate and photograph examples of man made pollution in the oceans. Here you can see some of the pictures and learn about the pollution they show. There are also some startling facts about oil pollution in the seas.

    * Rainforest Action Network
    The Rainforest Action Network works to protect tropical rainforests and the rights of those living in and around the forests.RAN also works with environmental and human rights groups in 60 countries as part of its effort to protect the rainforests and their inhabitants.
    The site is a mine of information and well worth visiting with students of any age.

    * Rainforests of Costa Rica
    A photographic journey through the forests, written by Sandy Wiseman. It takes the form of an illustrated essay / diary. Informative reading and good background research for rainforest studies.

    * Raptor Center
    The Raptor Center is an international vet facility for birds of prey. They undertake medical treatment, scientific investigation of wild raptors, and even allow you to sponsor a bird through their Adopt-A-Bird program.

    * South Pole Ozone Hole (1979-1992)
    Images from space depicting the 'hole' in the O-zone, There is no text, just false colour images.

    * The Fabulous Kakapo
    It's another parrot site - this time looking at what may well be the oddest parrot of them all; a parrot that can't fly

    * The Tiger Information Centre
    Provides information about, and increases awareness of, the dangers facing the five remaining subspecies of the Tiger. There is also a teacher's resources section.

    * Virtual Antarctic
    This is one of the TerraQuest expeditions. In 1995 the Livonia sailed to Antarctica. Online adventurers were able to monitor her progress and interact with the people onboard. This site is an account of the expedition.

    * Water Pollution
    A useful resource for students / teachers. This overview considers the importance of fresh water, how much water we've got, and some causes of pollution in both the developing and developed worlds. It looks at the River Rhine in Europe and Love Canal in the USA as case studies. It is aimed at students with a basic understanding of geography. Scroll down the Contents Table to the Environment And Pollution section, then select 'Water Pollution'.

    * Water Pollution Guide
    This school friendly site contains useful information about the sources of water pollution and the potential dangers it causes. It also gives a number of tips on preventing it and ways to help keep our waters clean. Clear information and entertaining graphics.

    * WhaleNet at Wheelock College, Boston
    A site that sets out to educate us about whales in an enjoyable way. Information about Whale Watch and a satellite tagging program to follow whales around the oceans.

    * World Conservation Monitoring Centre
    They offer conservation databases and assorted other services which are not so relevant to school use.

    * WWF - Global Network
    The World Wildlife Fund online magazine, full of articles, pictures and up to date news. A wonderful site for school use.

    * Zoological Record
    If you want information about taxonomy and nomenclature, this is a good site. If you aren't that involved in biosystematics and life sciences you'll probably find this to be rather scientific, dry and uninteresting. Not suited to younger students.

    * Zoos
    This is a pretty long alphabetical list of websites about zoos and zoo associations. If you want to find out about a particular zoo, this is a very good place to begin your search.
