Academic Geographical Organisations

 

United Kingdom

* Royal Geographical Society (with The Institute of British Geographers)
The Royal Geographical Society (with The Institute of British Geographers) is the Learned Society representing Geography and geographers. It was founded in 1830 for the advancement of geographical science and has been among the most active of the learned societies ever since. The largest geographical society in Europe, and one of the largest in the world, the RGS-IBG operates at a regional, national and international scale.

* Royal Scottish Geographical Society
Founded in 1884, the RSGS is an educational charity whose aims are to advance the science of Geography and create a greater understanding of the wider world, in the belief that geographical knowledge makes a significant difference to the way in which we view and shape the world we live in.

* Society of Cartographers
The Society was founded in 1964 at the University of Glasgow and was originally named the Society of University Cartographers. In 1989 the Society adopted a new title and constitution opening up membership to all in the cartographic community.Membership is widely drawn from the education sector, statutory institutions, local authorities, public utilities and the commercial and publishing industry. The majority of the membership is UK based, with an increasing world-wide membership.

The Society's aims also remain constant, that is to support the practising cartographer and encourage and maintain a high standard of cartographic illustration by providing information and opportunities to meet and exchange views and techniques with fellow practising cartographers

* The Royal Meteorological Society
The Royal Meteorological Society advances and promotes the science of meteorology by means of journals and other publications, discussion meetings, conferences, professional accreditation, grants, medals, prizes, workshops for schoolteachers and other educational activities. The Society serves not only those who earn their living through the profession of meteorology but also those whose work is affected by the weather or climate and those for whom meteorology is simply a pastime. The 'science of meteorology' includes climatology, hydrology, physical oceanography and other related disciplines.

* The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

The NERC funds and carries out research and training in the sciences of the environment ( Earth System Science). Its work covers the full range of atmospheric, earth, terrestrial and aquatic sciences, from the depth of the oceans to the upper atmosphere. Its science enables us to detect change; diagnose why change is taking place; define the boundaries of uncertainty; and seek solutions.

* The Association for Geographic Information
The objective of the AGI is to maximise the use of GI for the benefit of the citizen, good governance and commerce.

The AGI pursues these aims through a wide range of activities including lobbying, an active web site, a number of publications, specialist meetings and seminars throughout the country. These are all supported by our annual conference and trade exhibition.

There are also a number of special interest groups that provide services of specific relevant to users in various sectors as well as branches of the organisation in Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland.

* Hakluyt Society
The Society is a registered charity inspired by and named after Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616), the famous collector and editor of narratives of voyages and travels and other documents relating to English interests overseas. Membership of the Society is strongly recommended to everyone interested in the history of exploration and travel, geographical discovery and world wide cultural encounter. For an annual subscription of only £35 ($70), a member receives all volumes issued by the Society (other than those of the Extra Series) during the period of membership. Currently, two or three volumes are published each year.
* The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is one of the most respected and high profile global ‘standards and membership’ organisations for professionals involved in land, valuation, real estate, construction and environmental issues

* The Geographical Association (GA)
The Association is dedicated to promoting the development of geography as a subject. It believes that geography makes both a distinctive and a wide contribution to education and that it is an essential component in preparing young people for life in the twenty-first century. The GA is also committed to providing support to all those who are engaged with it - whether out of personal interest or professionally.

Mainland Europe
* Finland - Geographical Society of Finland
Geographical Society of Finland is a community of geographers and those interested in geography which traces its origins back to 1888. It was then that the original Geographical Society of Finland and Finnish Geographical Association were founded, to be united into a single organisation in 1921. The Society´s official languages are Finnish and Swedish, and its purpose is to promote research in geography and related sciences at home and abroad.
* The European Council of Geodetic Surveyors
CLGE represents Geodetic Surveyors in 17 States, which includes all 15 Member States of the European Union, and Norway and Switzerland:
