These links have been carefully selected and were considered relevant and suitable for school use at the time of checking. Clicking on them will take you to other web sites over which we have no control. If you have any doubts or concerns please check what is at the other end before using them in lessons. If you find any broken, re-directed or dead links please let us know.

  • * AshFax
    Latest images of volcanic ash clouds ( in TIFF format ) can be downloaded by ftp. The images plot the distribution of volcanic ash as it moves through the atmosphere.

    * Clouds from Space
    Photographs of clouds and weather systems recorded by cameras on the Space Shuttle.

    * Current European Weather
    The most recent images of European weather are available for download. There are many satellite images available covering visual, infra red, temperature and water vapour bands. Movies of weather systems are also available, along with a smaller selection of Middle Eastern satellite images. This site is one of the very best places to visit for the most recent satellite images.

    * DALI Request Page
    DALI is the French satellite program's database of SPOT images. By entering the latitude and longitude of the places you want to see, you can view five SPOT images.

    * Discovering Ubar
    References to Ubar are found in the Koran, the Arabian Nights, and countless Bedouin tales. Now, centuries after Ubar's disappearance, a combination of hard work, dedicated research, and remote sensing technology has perhaps unraveled this ancient mystery.

    * Earth From Space
    There are interesting quotes from astronauts and a good selection of images taken from space. The images are well selected and each has a text accompanying it that explains the type of picture and its geographical features.

    * Earth From Space
    A very interesting collection of images, taken from the Space Shuttle, that cover most of the planet. You can access individual images quite easily thanks to the way they have been organized by subject and geographical location.

    * EarthRise
    Excellent site with thousands of images to download. Using a submission form you can enter the name of a location anywhere in the world, and the computer will try to locate a satellite image of your chosen location. The images found in the archive are then shown on screen and can be downloaded for your own use. This is an excellent resource and it's very easy to use. Even young children can complete the form and find a picture of their home town.

    * Earthshots
    Earthshots is a collection of Landsat images and text, designed to show environmental changes and to introduce remote sensing. Images from other satellites, maps, and photographs are also included. Earthshots comes from the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center, the world's largest archive of earth science data.

    * European Weather Images
    This page contains a range of images which are generally useful if you are interested in current European weather. Almost all types of publicly available satellite images can be accessed from here. A really impressive site with a wealth of satellite imagery for free. If you have any interest in european weather, you should visit this site.

    * Forest Fires
    Monitoring fires in the USA is carried out using, among other techniques, satellite imaging. The images here show the locations of fires currently burning across the USA.

    * Geography From Space
    This site uses satellite images of the earth as a type of quiz. You see an image and a clue to it's identity. You have to help you decide what the image is showing. When you have made your decision/ wild guess, you can check the answer and read a description of the image on the separate answer page.

    * Geomorphology from Space
    Another very good NASA site that provides access to hundreds of images and textual descriptions of physical landscapes.

    * Geostationary Satellite Browser
    This is NOAA's image server covering it's satellite and remote sensing data. Among the many facilities offered is the chance to choose a satellite viewing the USA, pick either visual, infra-red or water vapour bands, then see the image you selected. GOES 8/10 full disk, Severe storm data, Sea Surface temperatures and coastal views are all available.

    * Globalxplorer
    An interesting idea for a web site. By entering either the Latitude and Longitude of a location, or by clicking the crosshair on a global map, you can see ( and also purchase) a map of your choosing. The maps are of a satellite style, and the scale is selected by you. Unlike many sources of satellite imagery, these maps won't cost you half your departmental budget for the next year. They can be acquired for 5 American dollars each. (No, I'm not on commission.)

    * Great Lakes Ecology
    An overview of the African Great lakes ecology. The content is rather advanced in some places, and is not suited to younger students working alone. For older students the material will be of interest both as an example of remote sensing and as an examination of ecosystems with significant biodiversity

    * MetNet Europe
    This is the home site of the MetLink International Schools Weather Project, sponsored by the Royal meteorological Society and the UK Met Office. From the main page you can access assorted data submitted by schools, lists of schools involved with the project, weather project ideas and weather contacts. All schools, especially in the UK, that have an interest in the weather should visit the site and consider becoming part of the project.

    * Nasa World Map
    Pick a location - see the space shuttle image. The site offers you an online map with blue dots on it. If you click on a dot you can see the image of that area.

    * Pictures of Earth
    Here you can see pictures and animated sequences depicting the Earth from space. The photographs are all in standard file formats, but some of the animations require your computer to have specialized software for viewing them. For PC computers the software will normally be in the form of yet another plug-in.

    * RS Glossary
    A brief glossary of Remote Sensing words. This is a handy reference document to download and keep in the classroom because some terms used in remote sensing wont appear in normal dictionaries or older geographical dictionaries.

    * SATPIX
    Meteosat Image Archive. Here you can search for weather images produced by the Meteosat satellites.

    * Satellite predictions
    Discover when satellites will pass over your location. This is useful for schools interested in tracking satellites or downloading data from them.

    * Sea Temperature Images
    For anywhere along the west coast of the USA you can use satellite images to find the current temperature of the sea surface.

    * Sea Temperatures
    Single and composite images that show sea surface temperatures.

    * Seafloor Topography
    Remote imaging of the sea floor. Another use of satellite images to explore areas that are normally out of reach to geographers.

    * SIR-C/X/SAR
    NASA site showing features such as volcanoes, rivers and cities. This is a good place to visit if you are new to satellite images and want to see some clear examples of how different features look on false colour images. All the images have a text to explain what you are looking at. A very good site.

    * Space Movie Archive
    Movies from the Space Shuttle. Excellent resource for school and general interest work, but you will need software to view the moving images.

    * Terraserver
    The Terraserver gives access to Microsoft's rather large collection of aerial images. The site includes images from around the world and if you are lucky enough to find your local area included, you should be able to see an image with a high degree of detail.

    * UK Met Office
    Latest satellite images for the UK in both the visible and infra-red bands. These images often show the UK and its weather systems very clearly and are excellent when used alongside a synoptic chart to show the relationships between weather systems, temperatures and cloud distribution.

    * Weather from Space
    Space shuttle images of weather systems around the globe. The images are a good selection and all have a text to accompany them.
