This colour photograph shows a cross-section through a low lying sand dune well colonised with grasses. The grass is mainly a special called Marram which grows about two feet tall and has long roots that help to bind the soil together. The cross-section shows layering, or strata, indicating that the dune was laid down as a series of layered deposits. At the base of the dune is a pile of sandy debris; material that has fallen off the cut face in the last few days.
